This original still life is a celebration of Arizona—its agriculture, cultural heritage, and the many influences that give the state its distinctive sense of place.
Cotton and citrus represent two of Arizona’s historic “Five C’s,” while pomegranates, another familiar sight in Arizona gardens, spill across the foreground. Among them are objects that reflect the cultures and traditions of the Southwest: a Navajo (Diné) wooden chicken, an ironwood quail, and a Mexican woven textile.
Rather than depicting a single Arizona landscape, the painting gathers together pieces of the state’s story—things grown here, found here, and influenced by the people and traditions that have shaped life in the Southwest. Behind the still life, saturated blue and warm violet tones subtly echo the colors and radiating design of Arizona’s state flag.
